Natural Characteristics of Leather

Most things created by nature are really hard to improve, and even if you could, why would you want to? Leathers are a thing of beauty. Each individual hide has unique characteristics and markings which tell the story of its life. No two hides will be the same as no two animals will be the same in size or shape. The colour and texture will vary. This will occur as the drying proccess and finish penetration will differ however carefully applied.

Common natural markings which are unique to each hide tell the story of the life of the amimal. The most common are illustrated below. These are not faults, they are the natural hallmarks of quality!

Full Grain, Aniline Dyed Natural Products

What does that mean?

Only 5-8% of a tannery's production will meet the grade criteria for a Full Grain, Aniline dyed hide
Only the best cow/bull hides are selected.
Aniline dyed hides are soked in a special "Aniline Solution" (used to enhance the grain and colour, retaining the character and definition of each hide). These are rotated in the drums for maximum softness and breathability
Leathers are skilfully selected by expert cutters, who carefully lay out and cut the furniture patterns. This enables the product to reflect the beauty and character of the hide.

Caring for Leather Furniture

Keep minimum distance of 20-30cm between your furniture and any source of heat
Direct sunlight will bleach and fade leather. Protect your leather from direct sunlight
All Material Things hides include a light surface waxed or sealed finish to help resist stains and marks
Regular cleaning can be done simply by using a damp cloth, taking care not to soak the leather
Never use spray polishes, cleaning solvents, furniture polish, oils, waxes or any other general stain removers
